Children in the first stage are missing something very specific: the notion of belief. Until sometime between their third and fourth birthdays, young children seem not to understand that the relationship between a person’s goals and her actions depends on the person’s beliefs about the current state of the world. Two-year-olds really do not understand why, if Sally wants the ball, she goes to the basket, even though the ball is in the box. They do not talk spontaneously about thoughts or beliefs, and have trouble understanding that two people could ever have different beliefs. Similarly, while a five-year-old knows that she has to see a ball to be able to tell whether its red, a three-year-old believes he could tell if the ball is red just by feeling it. In the first stage, children think that the mind has direct access to the way the world is; they have no room in their conception for the way a person just believes it to be.

The limitations of a stage-one understanding of the mind apply even to the child’s own past or future beliefs. If you show a child a crayon box and ask her what she thinks is inside, all children will say that the box contains crayons. But if you open the box to show that it actually contains ribbons, re-close the box, and then ask the child what she thought was in the box before it was opened, the three-year-old children claim they thought all along that the box contained ribbons.

An impressive conceptual change occurs in the three- or four-year-old child. From American and Japanese urban centers to an African hunter-gatherer society, children make a similar transition from the first stage of reasoning about human behavior, based mainly on goals or desires, to the richer second stage, based on both desires and beliefs. What explains the change? How do children acquire the idea that people have beliefs about the world, that some of the beliefs are false, and that different people have different beliefs about the same world? Between three and five, children mature in so many ways: their vocabulary increases by orders of magnitude, their memory improves, they just know more facts about the world. Each of these changes might account for the advantages of a five-year-old over a three-year-old in solving the false-belief task.

Este año, los productores de Buffy (una excelente serie de terror/fantasía/comedia) y Firefly (una excelente serie de ciencia ficción) tienen tres capítulos en la categoría de mejor producción audiovisual (cortos): “Chosen” (Buffy), “Heart of Gold” (Firefly) y “The Message” (Firefly).

En “The Parallels!” Italo Calvino and Jorge Luis Borges, John Barth comenta algunos paralelismos (y al menos un anti-paralelismo) entre la obra de Borges y la de Calvino. Sólo estoy en desacuerdo en dos puntos. Borges podía escribir con mucho humor, incluso llegar a la crueldad: “El Aleph” sin ir más lejos. Por otra parte, muchos lectores de Borges están de acuerdo en que creó al menos un personaje memorable: un tal Jorge Luis Borges, escritor argentino y universal dado a extraviarse en la metafísica.

Al texto se le podría hacer una pequeña puntualización hacia el final. Pero la dejo como ejercicio al lector.

Mark Haddon es el autor de una muy buena novela titulada the curious incident of the dog in the night-time. En esta pieza para The Guardian habla sobre la vida de escritor, lo que significa escribir para niños, y parece manifestar una ligera perplejidad ante el hecho de que una novela protagonizada por un chico con síndrome de Asperger se haya podido convertir en best-seller.

El trailer de Kill Bill Vol. 2. Y además, un par de noticias curiosas: Tarantino está considerando un anime que cuente el origen de Bill y una continuación quince años después protagonizada por la niña huérfana de la primera película:

“I have an idea about writing, like I did for the animation section in ‘Vol. 1,’ a Japanese anime feature about the origins of Bill — how Bill became Bill, you know, and deal with his three godfathers — Esteban Vihaio, Hattori Hanzo and Pei Mei,” he says, adding that for other ideas about the Bride or any of the DiVAS, he might do a “Frank Miller-style graphic novel or something.”

In addition, Tarantino is thinking of, maybe in a few years, doing a follow-up to the Bride’s story.

“I do have an idea that maybe 15 years from now, doing the last chapter in the story. But it wouldn’t star the Bride, it would star Nikki, Vernita’s daughter, and she would be the star of it and she would be 20 years old,” he says. “It would be Nikki going out to get revenge on the Bride. Uma wouldn’t be the star, she’d kind of be the bad guy, because the little girl kind of deserves her revenge.”

He says he might even shoot some footage for the project in the next couple years, while the actors are still young so that he can “stick them in a vault until I need them.” [...]

Estoy leyendo el divertido libro La tele que me parió de Pepe Colubi. En la página 29 me he encontrado con unos penetrantes comentarios sobre el abuelo de Heidi:

He querido dejar para el final el personaje que considero verdadero motor de la serie: el abuelo de Heidi. Filósofo alpino, asceta de altura, ermitaño en la montaña, la introversión del abuelo va más allá del mero laconismo para convertirse en una forma de ver y vivir; el abuelo era un dibujo, pero de animado no tenía nada. Las malas lenguas lo tachaban de vago, ya que en los interminables meses en los que duraba la serie, al buen hombre sólo se le vio hacer un queso, labor infinita y repetitiva que nos remite a la Penélope de Ulises tejiendo de día y deshaciendo de noche. Sin embargo, la misma consciencia de su improductividad le redimía de ser un mero parásito de la sociedad alpina; cuestiones como la renta de la cabaña, la ropa de su nieta o la comida de todo un San Bernardo pasaban a un segundo plano ante la seriedad de un hombre atenazado por el drama de su incapacidad para el trabajo serio. Por eso nunca sonreía. Y la nieta venga a cantarle “Abuelito dime tú” y él, ni pío.

Cuando Clara se levanta por fin de la silla (”para alborozo de la nieta, el perro, la cabra y los millones de crédulos que siguieron el acontecimiento ‘en directo’”):

Todo el mundo sonrió menos el abuelo, que dedicó al feliz suceso unos intensos segundos de su vida interior (por otra parte difíciles de plasmar en un dibujo).
