Robert B. Saper, now at Boston University’s School of Medicine, and his colleagues purchased imported Ayurvedic herbal medicine products from stores near Boston’s city hall and had them tested for metal contamination. They discovered that a fifth of the 70 samples tested contained lead, mercury or arsenic, or some combination of all three, in significant quantities. If taken as directed, the products would expose a person to more of the metals than is deemed safe by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Intelligence is no different than feathers or tentacles or petals. It’s a biological trait with both costs and benefits. On the other hand, intelligence may offer some evolutionary benefits, by allowing us to find food, withstand the elements, locate the car keys our children have put in their dollhouses, etc. But it is by no means a given that intelligence is always a net plus. It all depends on the conditions in which we–and other animals–find ourselves in.

Tokyo University’s Quantum-Phase Electronics Centre has come up with a scanner in the form of a flexible plastic sheet containing organic diodes that can be placed against an object to scan it. This makes it possible to get a perfect scan of both pages of old and fragile books without mauling them, for example. It also doesn’t require the amount of light needed by a conventional scanner, as the organic photodiodes pick up reflected light from the object being scanned, though you do need the object directly under a fluourescent light to get a good image.

Make Acrobat Reader 6 Load Faster

# Open the folder C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Reader.

1. Open the plug_ins folder.

2. Select all folders and files in plug_ins except for EWH32.api, printme.api, search.api.

3. Move everything that you selected to the folder called Optional that’s in the same directory as the plug_ins folder.

4. Launch Acrobat Reader to make sure it still works. If not, make sure that you left the three plugins in the appropriate directory.

Una aproximación al proyecto Minimo, el intento de crear un navegador para pequeños dispositivos basado en Gecko. Por el momento, Opera es líder indiscutido en ese terreno, y por ahora Minimo es más bien para PDAs con Linux, pero como bien dicen al final, la próxima guerra de los navegadores podría lucharse en tu móvil.

Y a mí de inmediato me ha venido a la cabeza aquella maravillosa escena de Monstruos, S.A. en la que, tras una peligrosa contaminación del otro mundo, el equipo de contención de daños sella de inmediato el edificio y procede a su descontaminación drástica. Me imaginé al bueno de Haro escribiendo la novena letra de procelario mientras un equipo de aguerrido académicos le salta encima para contener esa nefasta contaminación de la pureza del idioma. Me ha alegrado la mañana.

Según I4U, la PSP saldría en las tiendas japonesas al equivalente de unos 189 dólares, que son (el euro está muy bien con respecto al dólar, lo que me recuerda que debería ir a Amazon a pillar unos libros) alrededor de 145 euros. Evidentemente, no llegará a nuestras tiendas con semejante precio. Es más, parece que emprededores jóvenes japoneses están vendiendo sus consolas en eBay: ¡por 780 dólares!

Researchers from the Congolese Institute for Nature Conservation and the New York-based Wildlife Conservation Society have surveyed around a third of the 36,000-square-kilometre Salonga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. They did not see a single bonobo (Pan paniscus) in the flesh, and evidence from nests and dung suggests that the apes have become very scarce.

If the survey results represent a more general trend, there may be as few as 10,000 bonobos, also called pygmy chimpanzees, left in the wild, the researchers estimate. Experts had previously thought that there might be around 50,000 remaining.

Hay gente que se va y luego hay gente que se va. Echaré mucho de menos a JR, cuya bitácora, Pensamientos Radicalmente Eclécticos me gustaba mucho y me parecía de lo mejor que se hacía. Mucha suerte con lo que sea que decidas hacer a partir de ahora.

No me quiero extender más de lo necesario, que el cupo de próceres (y antipróceres) anda sobradamente cubierto. Creo sinceramente que ha llegado la hora de echarle el candado a este chiringuito infecto antes de que termine de descomponerse, colgar el pseudónimo y dedicarme a menesteres más satisfactorios en la vida. Uno acaba aburrido/harto/cansado de tanta ‘blogosfera’, de verdad.

El autor plantea una cuestión interesante: ¿será el iPod el próximo Newton de Apple? El Newton fue aquel PDA tan adelantado a su tiempo (que, por cierto, todavía usa mucha gente que lo usa) y que por tanto sufrió de una obsolescencia rápida. ¿Le pasará lo mismo al iPod? El autor, Jim Hughes, elucubra con una futura convergencia de los reproductores portátiles con los teléfonos móviles.

Bien, el asunto se puede mirar desde dos puntos de vista. Por un lado, pues sí, evidentemente el iPod es un producto condenado a desaparecer, como le pasa a todos los productos. Algún día, será insostenible tal y como es y tendrá que ser sustituido. Por otra parte, la fusión del móvil con el reproductor portátil podría llegar, sí, pero da la impresión de que en el artículo se plantean una serie de condiciones tecnológicas que no serán tan fáciles. Es decir, es muy simple decir “cogemos esto de aquí, lo conectamos con aquello de allá, más un poco de esto otro, y unos recorte de por aquí” y otra muy diferente hacerlo. Quizá cada una de esas tecnologías concretas exista e individualmente sea fácil de implementar, pero nada garantiza que la fusión de todas ellas dé un producto realmente usable.

Lo dicho, interesante.

I’m not saying the demand for a portable audio player is going to disappear, in fact quite the opposite, I’m predicting the market will expand hugely. What I’m predicting is that the music player will merge into the device 90% of the World already carry with them every day, the mobile phone.
